Kansas State University's Student Government Association (SGA) leaders, Student Body President Paige Vulgamore and Vice President Jack O'Malley, joined host Cole Deutschendorf for the first episode of the SGA Weekly Update. The discussion centered around their roles, initiatives, and future plans aimed at enhancing student life on campus.

Day-to-Day Operations and Key Initiatives

Vulgamore and O'Malley described their daily responsibilities as a mix of meetings with university officials and overseeing a cabinet of 20 members. A significant focus of their administration is on applied learning opportunities, which aim to integrate experiences like studying abroad or community engagement into students' curricula. This initiative aligns with Kansas State University President Richard Linton's strategic plan.

Another key project is extending Hale Library's hours. The SGA is working with Dean Joe Mocnik to potentially implement a 24/5 model, allowing students more flexibility in their study schedules. This initiative emerged from student feedback and aims to enhance the overall academic environment.

Outdoor Spacing RFP Proposal

The episode highlighted the Outdoor Spacing Request for Proposal (RFP), which seeks to improve outdoor spaces to promote student health and well-being. With $250,000 allocated for this project, students are encouraged to submit creative ideas that could transform campus spaces. The proposal process emphasizes student involvement in shaping the university's physical environment.

Engagement with Diverse Student Groups

Vulgamore and O'Malley emphasized their commitment to representing all student demographics by maintaining a diverse cabinet and engaging with various student organizations. They stressed the importance of listening to underrepresented groups to ensure their needs are addressed in SGA policies.

Challenges and Collaborations

The SGA leaders acknowledged challenges such as increasing student engagement post-COVID-19 and managing financial constraints related to tuition and fees. They highlighted their collaborative relationship with university administration, which they believe is crucial for implementing successful initiatives.

Future Projects and Advice

Looking ahead, the SGA plans to continue advocating for student interests at both state and national levels. They encouraged students to get involved in campus life, emphasizing that participation in organizations can enrich their college experience.

Vulgamore and O'Malley expressed gratitude for the support from their team and the broader university community, underscoring the rewarding nature of their leadership roles. They urged students to stay informed about SGA activities through social media channels.
