MANHATTAN, Kan. — In a recent interview on Wildcat 91.9, Rich Vargo from the Riley County Clerk's Office emphasized the critical role of voting and provided insights into the processes that ensure election security and accessibility. With an important election approaching, Vargo outlined the responsibilities of his office and offered guidance on voter registration and participation.
Election Responsibilities and Security
Vargo explained that the Riley County Clerk's Office is responsible for all aspects of election management, including organizing 26 polling places and training over 250 poll workers. "It's a huge undertaking," he noted, highlighting the complexity of programming and securing election machines. The office collaborates with the Kansas Secretary of State's office to comply with state and federal laws, ensuring that election equipment undergoes rigorous certification processes to maintain integrity.
Voter Registration Methods
Residents of Riley County have multiple options for registering to vote. Vargo encouraged people to visit voter info at rileycountyks.gov to print a voter registration card, which requires a signature. Online registration is also available but still necessitates a signature for verification purposes. Vargo stressed the importance of matching signatures on mail ballots with those on file to ensure authenticity.
Early Voting Opportunities
For early voting, residents can visit the advanced voting location at 110 Courthouse Plaza or the Kansas State Student Union in the Bluemont Room. Both locations are open for 20 days starting October 16th. Voters can also apply for an advance ballot by mail, with deadlines set for October 29th to request and November 5th to postmark returned ballots.
Encouraging Participation
While the Clerk's Office does not actively promote voter registration drives, it provides necessary documentation and support for community-led initiatives. Vargo highlighted the importance of young people participating in elections and reminded them to ensure their voter registration is current by October 15th to have their votes counted.
Poll Worker Involvement
Vargo also called on residents to consider becoming poll workers, particularly younger individuals who are more familiar with technology used at polling places. Interested parties can apply through rileycountyks.gov. "Our community is great at stepping up," he said, noting the rewarding experience of working alongside seasoned poll workers during elections.
As election day approaches, Vargo's insights serve as a reminder of the civic engagement and meticulous efforts that go into securing fair elections in Riley County.
