MANHATTAN, Kan. — In an hour long debate held at the Kansas State University Student Union, incumbent Usha Reddi and challenger Brad Starnes presented their visions for the Kansas State Senate District 22 seat. The debate, organized by The K-State Young Democrats, Riley County Republican Party, political science department, and Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy; focused on issues pertinent to the district's diverse constituency, including tax policy and engagement with Gen Z voters.

Both candidates emphasized the importance of reaching out to younger voters, particularly the college students who form a significant part of the district's demographic. Starnes highlighted his campaign's efforts to engage Gen Z through grassroots initiatives, such as distributing campaign shirts and encouraging supporters to spread the word among peers.

"We need to have common sense, talk with each other," Starnes said, emphasizing his focus on fiscal responsibility and reducing taxes.

Reddi, seeking re-election, underscored her commitment to bipartisan collaboration in a predominantly Republican legislature. She expressed concerns about extreme legislation potentially affecting the moderate community of Manhattan. "I will always work hard for every Kansan," Reddi stated, advocating for initiatives like workforce development and tax relief to boost the local economy.

Both candidates acknowledged the critical role of Gen Z voters in the upcoming election. Reddi has been leveraging social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok to connect with younger constituents, while also addressing logistical challenges such as voter registration among transient student populations.

As the debate concluded, both candidates reiterated their dedication to serving the community and encouraged all eligible voters to participate in the election on November 5th.
