As #16 Kansas State (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) prepares to face Houston (3-5, 2-3 Big 12) this Saturday, the Wildcats look to extend their winning streak against a Cougars team under new leadership. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM on FOX, and expectations are high for K-State, while Houston aims to pull off an upset at home. I had the pleasure of interviewing Blake Antkowiak, recruiting writer for Cougars Digest and owner of Coogs Coverage, to gain valuable insights into the Cougars’ progress and what the Wildcats can expect in this matchup.
Houston’s Resilience Under New Leadership
Blake Antkowiak, recruiting writer for Cougars Digest and account owner of Coogs Coverage, reflects on the transition from Dana Holgerson to Willie Fritz as Houston's head coach. Fritz, a Kansas native and former Tulane coach, is widely regarded as a commendable hire.
Despite the challenges posed by a tough schedule, Antkowiak believes the Cougars have exceeded preseason expectations. “You really can’t look at the wins and losses,” he says, emphasizing the importance of building a winning culture rather than focusing solely on record. Houston has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly with impressive wins over TCU and Utah, indicating progress in the program's rebuilding phase.
Zeon Chriss: A legit Dual-Threat Quarterback?
Antkowiak discusses the evolving role of quarterback Zeon Chriss, who has emerged as a dual-threat option. Despite having thrown three touchdowns and three interceptions this season, Chriss has showcased his potential as a runner, ranking as the team’s third-leading rusher.
“He has that big playability,” Antkowiak notes, comparing him to a “poor man's Lamar Jackson” due to his ability to create explosive plays with his legs. However, Antkowiak acknowledges that Chriss, as a sophomore, sometimes struggles with decision-making, which could be a concern against K-State's disciplined defense. The Wildcats' ability to contain Chriss will be crucial in determining the game’s outcome, as Houston relies on his dynamic play to keep the offense moving.
Defensive Strengths and Keys to Victory
On the defensive side, Houston has performed admirably, currently ranking 18th in the country by allowing 317 yards per game. Antkowiak highlights key defensive players, such as Keith Cooper Jr. and Michael Batten, who anchor the unit. The Cougars’ defense must limit K-State’s rushing attack and create opportunities for turnovers.
According to Antkowiak, Houston's keys to victory include sustaining long offensive drives, controlling the clock, and winning the turnover battle. “If you can just keep your offense on the field, you give yourself a chance,” he advises. For Houston to upset K-State, they will need to play a clean game, avoid turnovers, and leverage their home-field advantage during this "blackout game," where past performances indicate a potential for upsets against favored opponents.
As Kansas State heads into this matchup, they will face a Houston team striving to prove their worth. With a new coach and a hungry roster, the Cougars will be looking to make a statement against the ranked Wildcats
