K-State Volleyball (8-11) completes the series sweep over the West Virginia Mountaineers (8-13) on Thursday after a five-set victory.
The Wildcats took sets one, three, and five to win the match 3-2. Another great performance by the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Aliyah Carter, who led the Cats to their eighth win on the season and sixth in Big 12 play.
The Set List
Set One - K-State 25-18
The up and down match all started in set one. K-State was aided to a four point lead by two aces from Symone Sims. The Cats went up 12-8 and never looked back, taking the first set 25-18. Transfer Meg Brown led the Cats with a .667 hitting percentage.
Set Two - West Virginia 25-22
The Mountaineers responded to the first set by evening out the count 1-1. With 12 ties in set two, a Mountaineer 8-3 run to end the set led them to take set two. Out hitting K-State .188 to .108 in their 25-22 victory.
Set Three - K-State 25-20
After only hitting .108 in set two K-State hit .279 and tacked on two aces to win set three. A 9-3 run to open the set, K-State grew their lead to 18-8 before a run by the Mountaineers. K-State was able to hold 25–20 thanks to six kills from Carter.
Set Four - West Virginia 25-14
West Virginia again responded to a K-State set victory with their own. This time the Mountaineers jumped out to a 12-3 lead and never let up. Holding K-State to a -.067 hitting percentage and added 4 blocks by West Virginia Junior Laila Ibrahim.
Set Five - K-State 15-10
K-State took the last set after falling apart in set four. An 8-6 lead stretched out to 10-7 and the Cats didn’t let West Virginia back in it. Hitting a match best .353 and two blocks by the K-State defense led to a 15-10 win, and claiming the match three sets to two.
K-State Leaders
The K-State box score was led by Aliyah Carter with 20 kills. Carter also racked up two blocks and an ace. Izzi Szulczewski tallied 41 assists on the night, increasing her total over 700 to 717. Meg Brown led the way close to the net with five blocks and Brenna Schmidt helped with four of her own.
A Look Ahead
K-State will take a road trip to the Southwest and compete in two matches against new Big 12 members Arizona and #13 Arizona State. K-State closes out their season playing five ranked matches in their eight remaining games. K-State is currently ranked 7th in the Big 12 with their 6-3 record in conference play. The Wildcats next home match is on November 13 and will be live here on Wildcat 91.9.
