I might as well get this out of the way and say that I’m a DC fanboy over Marvel. However, Marvel seems to have their act together as opposed to the producers for the DC movies. After Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad, Justice League and more, I was starved for an actual good movie and I think they finally delivered.
Shazam! is the tale of a foster kid named Billy Batson who rooms with his disabled friend Freddy Freeman. Both manage to get along with one another and Billy even helps his foster brother against bullies. Billy is then summoned by Shazam himself and is chosen to be its new champion. Freddy, ecstatic over Billy’s new powers, begins to test him and his powers, which leads to all sorts of mischief. Soon, Shazam is met with his enemy, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) and has to help his foster family and the city against the deadly doctor and understand what it means to really be a hero.
The film is light-hearted, fun, and full of comedy and its stars have wonderful chemistry. Perhaps now, DC sees a chance to make wonderful films about DCs greatest heroes instead of cashing in on the superhero hype train.
