Jhené Aiko- Trip

“Attention is expensive to pay
I can’t get by on minimum wage
Been dealing with this venomous rage
Since I was under the age
I’ve been under the influence of pain
And I never needed nobody
Never needed no one”

Nobody Lyrics by Jhené Aiko

Jhené Aiko is one of my favorite songwriters because of her vulnerability. I have been following her artistry since her Sailing Souls mixtape released in 2014–with the track July featuring Drake.

Jhené creativity and ability to create timeless music is the reason so many artist collaborate with her. She is 1 of 2 members of the duo Twenty88, Big Sean being the other member. The duo released a self titled debut album in 2016 and highlights their great musical chemistry.

While We’re Young is the first single from the 22 tracks that were released Friday, September 22, 2017.

I was shocked to see this album! The cover art immediately caught my attention so I started listening and was NOT disappointed! Jhené takes us on a trip–YES pun intended!

My favorite song I cannot get enough of is Sativa which features Swae Lee from duo Rae Sremmurd. Another great track is Ascension which features Brandy singing the refrain:

“What do you do it for?
What are you running for?
What are you running towards?
What are you trying to prove?
What do you got to lose?
What is the path you choose?”

Jhené meditates on these questions and Brandy’s voice makes this song endearing.

Trip Movie Cover

Trip, the movie, is written by Jhené Aiko and Trace Oliver. This project explores her struggle with dealing with the loss of her brother, Miyagito cancer in 2012. Her most vulnerable self, named Penny, copes with the pain and memories of her brother by going on this journey.

She discloses that most of her songs began as poems while on drug-induced trips. Jhené often refers to her “MAP”–Movie, Album, Poetry Book–for navigation.

“In sharing this MAP, I hope to inspire others to be more present in the lives of the people they love”, said Jhené.

“This map has been helping me navigate through my suffering, uncovering the righteous path that has been carved out before and for me…Helping me identify my pain and my mistakes so that I can move forward and reach my full potential and find the light at the end of the tunnel” she says.

This album is relatable because we all deal with the loss of life and we often times try to escape but to no avail our situations and feelings are present.

Other tracks I like from the project are:

  1. When We Love
  2. Never Call Me ft Kurupt
  3. Frequency
  4. Nobody
  5. You are Here

Her title track Trip features Mali Music.

Jhené said, “I felt like it was the perfect song to end the album. It sums up everything. And it also feels like I’m still on this trip and it’s still going on, but the path has been cleared and I have a better vision of it.”

“I believe suffering can be alleviated when we understand we are not going through any of it alone”
