“I have a blast when I am on air. But my favorite thing about working at the station is being able to host and produce Wildcat World of Sports,” Alex Achten, a senior in Journalism and Mass Communications said.
At the Wildcat 91.9, Achten is the host and producer of Wildcat World of Sports on Fridays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. He also does play-by-play and color commentary for the KSDB Sports Staff, and DJs on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
“The show has been such a blessing to me and I get so excited every week to get on air with my co-host, Bill Gurney, and talk all things K-State sports,” Achten said. “I have got to interview some K-State athletes and coaches with phenomenal characters. That is a blast. I have made friends with athletes and professionals throughout the journey. The show has opened so many doors and been way more successful than I ever imagined.”
Achten started at the Wildcat 91.9 two and a half years ago by taking a nighttime DJ shift that no one else wanted. He was also a part of the sports staff, where he found his niche.
“Campus radio is truly a beautiful thing. It is a great way for students to interact with students,” Achten said. “Obviously we have a lot more listeners than college students. However, college students are a large demographic of the listening audience. It is a way for us to play the music they want to hear that other stations may not offer. It also provides some great specialty shows that you will not find anywhere else.”
Achten is graduating in May and looking for jobs in radio and TV.
“At this particular moment, I think I would prefer radio,” Achten said. “However I will take a job wherever I can get one and right now there are more jobs to be had in television. The important thing for me to remember is God has a plan for me and I need to have the patience to listen to His plan and trust it.”
