“Yeah, my sound got the whole city in your way right now
So I don’t give a **** about what anybody sayin’ right now.”
Drake is angry. Late 2014, the Toronto rapper released three songs in response to a hack, “Heat of the Moment,” “How Bout Now” and “6 God.” It’s telling that the latter (quoted above) is the only one featured on his most recent mixtape, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.
While many are speculating what the release means, it’s probably best to just sit back and enjoy mixtape Drake. Free from the constraints of his daunting commercial expectations on studio albums, he is able to let loose. While his signature autotune flow is all over the record, poppy hip-hop crossovers like “Hold On, We’re Going Home” are no where to be found here. Abrasive production (complete with prevalent gun effects) and some potent jabs at other rappers (directed at frenemy Kendrick Lamar – “They gon’ say your name on them airwaves/ They gon hit you after like it’s only rap.”) show a side of Drake we haven’t seen in a long while. All together, it’s a fascinating juxtaposition when compared to 2013’s Nothing Was The Same.
If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is a welcome departure from Drake’s recent work, and serves as a nice listen to tide fans over until Tales From the 6.
