Emily Porter and Rachel Tucker have been doing an amazing job with their new specialty show “The Sounds of Broadway”. You can tune in on Sundays at 1:00pm to hear their show.
Where are your from and what is your year/major?
Emily: I’m a senior in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Rachel: I am a junior and I am majoring in Journalism. I am from Chanute, Kansas.
Why did you join KSDB?
R: I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to gain experience and I have always loved radio.
E: I joined KSDB because Rachel asked me if I would be interested in doing a specialty show centering around Broadway culture and music, something on which we initially based our friendship.
What have you learned from working at KSDB?
E: I’ve learned that radio is not nearly as scary as you’d think it would be once you finally just start talking, and that it’s a lot more than just pushing a button. Also, asking questions is a lot better than just guessing when you don’t know how to work the board!
R: I have learned all about how to operate a sound board and play things on the radio. I have no previous radio experience, so this is all new to me.
What is your favorite part about working at KSDB?
R: I love that I have the opportunity to play my absolute favorite music and talk about it on the radio. I never thought I would get the chance to start my own show and co-host it with a really good friend.
What made you want to start “The Sounds of Broadway”?
R: I wanted to start “The Sounds of Broadway” because I listen to showtunes every day. I love listening to all different kinds of musicals and I wanted to share some of my love for it with people through the radio.
E: Rachel came up with the idea of “The Sounds of Broadway” because it is something that we’re both interested in and is something about which we know plenty! We always tried to find time to spend together and it works doing the show together because she’s getting credit for it and we’re getting to hang out more.
What is your favorite musical/play of all time?
E: My favorite show is probably “Book of Mormon” because it’s inappropriate, just like me.
R: My favotire musical of all time would probably have to be “The Sound of Music.” I absolutely love the movie version with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Though I have a place in my heart for “Wicked” because it was the first show I saw on Broadway in New York City.
